Clerodendrum splendens

Clerodendrum splendens (clerodendrum splendens)

Taken at Oxfords botanic gardens yesterday. Not the best bunch of blooms (they're a little tatty), but a real favourite of mine. Native to tropical Africa.

Thanks Tetrarch! Did you see the photos of a certain Iris?

I did indeed as you will notice by my likes. I do like frills, fringes and flounces, but this pic is certainly a stunner despite the ageing flowers.

Meanie:

Beautiful flowers! There's some nice specimens around here in San Diego...however, it's not as widely grown as some other species like C. thomsoniae, ugandense, phillippinum.

It's quite rare around here too Delonix!!!

Meanie:

It's definitely a tropical plant.

Sadly true.....

I have a Clerodendrum quadriloculare - Starburst Bush next to my banana plants...I've had it for almost 2 years and it still hasn't bloomed yet. It's suppose to bloom in winter or spring. I hope it blooms this coming bring!

That's a nice one, and reasonably hardy too from a quick google.....

Meanie:

I meant to say in the previous posting: I hope it blooms this coming spring. lol! :>)

It's does have some beautiful flowers. Even though it's widely sold here at our nurseries...it's not particularly hardy. It looses some of it's leaves when we have extended cool weather.

It's good to hear real life accounts Delonix - some of the info on the net can be misleading. I saw several hardiness ratings of minus 5c

Meanie:

I have a feeling that's the root-hardiness (of established plants). The plant itself is extremely sensitive to even a light frost...from what I've read. I don't get frost here, however, during our cool spells this year some of the leaves fell off.
