This was 1 of 10 newly planted trees in the lawn bowling area in Balboa Park, San Diego, CA. Hong Kong Orchid trees are very widely used as street trees here. They bloom from Oct. through April. Photo taken Mar. 3, 2011.

Meanie:
All the newly planted Hong Kong Orchid trees have large stakes holding them up for now. I think these trees were planted at the ending of Sept. or beginning of October.
Hong Kong Orchid trees are perfectly hardy here in San Diego...there's many thousands planted as street trees, in people yards and by commercial buildings. It's a very popular tree.

Marguerite:
You must have Bauhinia variegata. Bauhinia x blakeana - Hong Kong Orchid tree is a sterile hybrid. All the trees sold here are grafted (they can be air-layered also).
The best time to start Bauhinia seeds is in Spring. The easiest way to germinate them is to put the seeds into to boiling water (with stove off) for 3 - 5 minutes...then pour equal amount of cool water in...let them soak for 24 hours. After sowing, generally seeds will germinate within 3 or 4 days. I use this same technique to germinate my Delonix regia.
