not quite sure why the canal is this colour but this is the second lot of ducklings i have seen there this year ~ these are part of a family of 8. i could have watched them all day.

is that what eats them wagger?
the fox gets them if they are on land!

Lots of things will kill them, Sticki - even other ducks and swans. Only a very small proportion of them survive to adulthood. All part of nature unfortunately.

thanks richard. i saw the swans on the canal next to where i work with 5 growing cygnets on friday ~ lovely but i think the shelducks with their 13 babies that i saw in scotland on my holiday were a little more spectacular ~ however, my favourite is still the little pheasant chick i met on holiday ~ i am just going to put his picture on my photos.

The recipe for duck with cherry sauce sounds really lovely: does the variety of cherries make a difference do you think?
What about adding a little cherry brandy to the sauce to liven things up?
30 May, 2011
cherry brandy would liven anything up i should think ~ does wonders for me!!

Roast duck with orange sauce is gorgeous too ;) Love the picture :)

I'm sure if you look at the cute fluffy ducklings again it will put you off.
- saying that, we went out for a meal the other night.... slow roast duck *nomnom*

slow roast is really good.
ive been watching a real bully on the canal this morning ~ a swan who wouldnt let anything else swim in front of him ~ he put up his wings, flapped them and aggresively went after a canada goose ~ several times and ducks.

"Make way for ducklings!".... There's always a dictator lurking in even the most placid ponds, it seems...lol. Canada Geese can be pretty aggressive when they're in the majority as well. Perhaps it has more to do with the time of year than anything else. Used to live near a waterfowl sanctuary and it was weird to walk out to my car on a cold frigid January morning and hear the geese honking down in the park... (there were heating cables in the river so it wouldn't freeze over.) Love little baby ducks tho...cutest things.

i wonder if the canada goose had tried to have a go at the cygnets further up the canal and the swan parent wasnt having it!!!

Canada geese taste lovely as well sticki. Don't suppose you have any recipes for them do you?
2 Jun, 2011
