I have had sawfly (I gather there are trillions of different ones) on my Mugho pine, and on my Explorer Series rose, Now something is defoliating my VC...and it doesn't look like what I had before...ugly black looking things...I'm going out with a spray bottle full of soap suds.!!! Even if I can't get them to move on at least I can make their lives difficult.

Yes, sawflies are host-specific like moths and butterflies, so there's bunches of different kinds. Today I wiped dozens of them off of my red hibiscus. I'll post a pic. They really did a number on it. They hit it every year so I should have checked earlier.

I wish I had the courage to try an Hibiscus... such beautiful blooms...did you see ickledigga's comment about a cocktail that has an hibiscus flower in the bottom of the glass.?..which you are required to eat to finish the drink...I think she said it was a champagne cocktail...She said the flower tasted lovely...
It's so hard to be everywhere at once in the garden...I know what you mean...my VC was ravaged before I even knew the problem existed!

Lori, you might want to count 'feet' on this guy. I lightened the pic and it looks like he has way more than 4 pairs of "middle" legs which would make him a sawfly larva (moth larvae have 4 pairs of "middle" legs or prolegs). Sawfly larvae can defoliate really quickly.
