Hi DD2, I have ferns in pots and in the ground. The good thing about pots, are that I can move them around, should I want to make some changes .......... No, I open my garden on Saturday 20th and Sunday 21st of August. So you are opening your garden this Sunday and Monday .... Well wishing you good luck as well ..... I do hope the weather is kind to you :-)

Louis:
Great display of ferns! The one the left, on the table looks like a small Blechnum gibbum - Dwarf Fiji Fern, is it?
I have a fairly large Dwarf Fiji Fern (almost 4.5ft/1.7m tall) in my front yard.

Hi Delonix1....Yes it's the Blechum gibbum. Wow, it takes years to grow a trunk, as they are miniature tree ferns ........ Take a picture of it as I would like to see it please....

Louis:
I have several pics posted. I've had mine in the ground in 3 places for 5 years before I took it out last year...it was always getting too much sun (it needs shade here in San Diego). Now, it's under my shade structure in the front yard...and now has huge fronds and looks so good! I'll post a new pic soon. :>)

Louis, your garden is one of the ones on here I would really like to visit. It looks so lush! Very meditteranean...like being on your holiday at home!

It's just like that Karen...but of course it was raining when I visited!!
12 Mar, 2013
Ha ha! 'Exactly ' like home then!

Thank you Karen and Anne, but unfortunately, I will be moving sometime in the Summer, but it will give me the chance of rebuilding a brand new garden. I will still have ferns, colour etc.......... :-)

Brilliant....we love nothing better than a brand new garden to watch coming to life Louis! :)

Are you staying in Northants Louis?
19 Mar, 2013

Louis:
It's always an exciting challenge building a new garden. I'm sure it'll be beautiful! :>)
How's your Belchnum gibbum? my dwarf Fijian (Belchnum gibbum) fern is putting out about two dozen fronds now.
Check it out, when you have time.

Very much so Delonix1, it will be a nice challenge building a new garden. My Belchnum Gibbum have ceased to be, I lost it suddenly. I can see your one looks in a perfect state, but your weather is better than ours here in the UK. How I wish we had your weather here..............Well, I can only wish .....:-)

Louis:
I can't even begin to tell how many Blechnum gibbum I've lost in the past due to drying out (it cannot dry out at all, while young or it'll die) . The one I have is about 7 years old now. I have made sure it doesn't dry out at all.
The weather has been very good lately, warm and very mild at night; however, this past January and February we had cooler than normal weather...and in early January we had some very unusual cold weather for San Diego. A few of my plants even experienced cold damage! I had one morning low of 36ºF (2.2ºC) for about 20 minutes, which is extremely rare here in urban San Diego. Luckily, I don't get frost!

My word, you're so very lucky. We are expected to have snow tomorrow, so we have to be limited as to what plants we can have, but I have a big greenhouse with heating, otherwise I would not have half the plants I do have at the present moment............
As I said earlier, how I wish we could have your weather :-)
21 Mar, 2013
Wow! Snow at this time of year, that sounds very unusual for this time of year, right?
Luckily, you have a big, heated greenhouse! The plants must be very happy in it. :>)
The weather has been very nice, around 76ºF (24ºC) during the day; although, last week we had some very warm weather, some temps in the inland San Diego Areas were up to 94ºF (34ºC), that's too hot!
21 Mar, 2013
Wow, what lovely weather to be gardening in I can only dream........ The temp in my greenhouse is between 50 -60, so all plants in there are doing really well, I'm pleased to say :-)
24 Mar, 2013
Yes, the weather has been perfect for gardening.
50 - 60ºF seems pretty chilly for a greenhouse, but I guess as long as the plants are happy. :>)
What's the outdoor daytime temps there?
24 Mar, 2013
It's -2 at the moment and the forecast is -4 for tonight and tomorrow daytime, so keeping my heating on........
24 Mar, 2013
WOW! That's extremely COLD! :>(
The high temp here is only going to be around 72ºF (22ºC) today. I'm guessing I shouldn't complain at all about this temp. I was hoping for a little warmer temps, though.
