Yes, it is a little frustrating! I've seen hundreds of photos of this tree is bloom on the internet...rarely do I see a very clear pic.

Thanks! Yes, the very brilliant, rich red of the flowers usually bleeds out in photos...as you can tell by this pic. :>)

Lovely flowers.... this tree is always soberb, even when is caught during winter, no flowers no leaves.... even then... it opent its branches embracing the atmosphere around

Yes, it's truly a magnificent tree! You and I are very lucky to see these trees grow in the ground! My guess is that there's probably more trees there where you live than here in San Diego...although, they are becoming increasing more popular.

So,these were never tried in San Diego 1870- 1970's? Is their history just recent?

btw I read the King of Hawaii donated a few to San Francisco in the early 20th century. They rotted,not froze..but rotted.

That's very true, what kills them is the cool, wet soil. It's not the temps. In Tucson D. regia trees have survived several freezes down to the low 20's (of course with die-back to some of the woody tips) there they recover very fast in the hot, desert heat.

They grow very well in San Diego. I'm not sure why it's been so recently, 1980's that this tree was planted. Now, it's much more available at nurseries. Very small plants can be a little tricky; large ones are very hardy, though. In the Coachella Valley I've seen many large trees thriving in the extremely hot weather. Also, the Imperial Valley there's many large trees. In Yuma, AZ... Delonix regia is very widely planted, also.
