I really like blue flowers, wonder if I could have a colour-themed garden.
I can remember, years ago, some kind of medication named "Gentian Violet", for insect bites etc; wonder if this is a related plant.
ps just Googled "Gentian Violet", it's still on sale at Amazon and other as an antiseptic - maybe you could produce your own for home use, Linda!

I remember a boy at school having Gentian Violet...I think it was on his legs......it stained the skin badly!!!! Don't think I will be making my own. lol

I've checked Wiki and a few other sites, apparently it was a natural antiseptic - and probably still is *s*. It did stain the skin, but when one had been half eaten alive by midges or gnats, that was a small price to pay. and I suppose it'd dye clothes as well.

The poor boy whose mother covered him in it was not aware what a hard time he had at school because of it!!!!

awwwww, that's a shame - I can't remember how long it takes to fade, but feel for the kid - children aren't at all civilised when it comes to other kids being "different" - and being purple would be hard to miss.

Well I still remember it!!!!!!

Gentian violet was named because of its colour and is not related to either plant. It used to be used to treat fungal skin conditions like ringworm. It was also used to treat thrush in babies. I thought it had been relegated to the history books until Franl googled and found it on sale. I'm sure it could only be used on unbroken skin because it left a permanent stain if it got into the tissues.

I remember I boy in primary school having it on his face etc and as a child we were a bit worried about it. Poor boy.

I remember how unsightly it was and would not want to inflict that on any child. Children can be very cruel and even if the horror of it meant the lad was shunned because of it, he must have felt very isolated.

That was about fifty-seven years ago SG and if I still remember it how does he feel now?

I hope his life has been a full and happy one and that he has been able to crowd it out of his memory.
