Olive Tree

Olea Europaea ,,,,,, Couldn't resist on buying another olive tree. Planted this one on the patio, as you can see, had to built a retaining timber wall as the roots were quite big, even though I dug a deep and wide hole.

Louis this Olive looks fairly old, a lovely specimen.Ours is planted in the garden, it managed to survive last winter, but, it is not as old as yours.

Its lovely Louis, i love old trees like this, are you expecting olives? It looks great there and i love your wall pots, more for my wishlist ;))

Thank you DD2. This tree has been estimated to at least 80 years old, and I just love the old contorted trunk. Did you cover your tree with fleece last Winter? I might cover the trunk at least just to be on the save side.

Thank you Youngdaisyd. I don't think I will be getting any olives next year, but I do have another one with just one solitary olive haha..!! I bought the wall pots in a garden centre in Banstead, Surrey, and I haven't seen it anywhere else.........Maybe you can put it on your Xmas list as well LOL. :))

26 Sep, 2011

Yeah, my xmas list gets longer Louis, If my plans go well for next year, i want and need some pots like yours :) One olive lol, a bit like a pear tree i used to own..

26 Sep, 2011

Yep, maybe you will get some of the colourful wall pots, as it brightens the place up. Hahahaha so you had a pear tree with just one pair....I just feel so sorry for this lonely olive lol

26 Sep, 2011

Hahahaha, poor little olive, hub checked that pear out every day, one day i noticed it was gone! Who ate the pear i said, me he said, what was it like, Like a Tornup (turnip) he said lol..
You know your Apple and Pear sculpters, Someone was selling them on ebay along with a pair of cherries, the stalks were gold, (forgot what metal) half apple too, 5 pieces altogether, they went for £70, i was tempted to bid but it was collect only :( he lived too far away..They were beautifull..

26 Sep, 2011

Did your hub feel guilty? LOL!!! That was a very good price for the apple and pear sculptures, as I paid £60 for the apple and the same for the pear. I was tempted to buy the cherry as well, as it was cheaper and I wish I had.......Now you got be wanting the cherry as well. I will pop over the place I got the sculptures and see if they have the cherries. I know what you mean, the stalks are made of brass, the same as the pear and apple stalks.
I tell you what DD2, they weigh a ton, I can barely move them, just in case you're thinking of going a long way to buy some, as you could only get one in a car due to its weight. :))

Oh sorry Louis, ive just cost you £60 lol. They are worth it tho, they looked big in his pics, if i ever bid and win any ill make sure we take the van, I did have a soft spot for the Cherries tho, not sure if they were seperate or welded together by the stalks ! they would look amazing in your garden, with your rooms and nooks and crannies, much better than in mine..

26 Sep, 2011

That's OK Youngdaisyd, I'll send you the bill lol. The stalks just fits into a hole therefore one can move the direction of the stalks............Oh yes you will need a van better. Thank you very much Youngdaisyd for the nice comments on my garden, you are most kind... Bless You :))

Louis:

Isn't this a very confined space for an olive tree? They grow to become a huge tree.

26 Dec, 2011

Hi Delonix1, this tree has been planted in the ground, and as for the size of this tree, it takes many years to grow much bigger, and if it did, I can always trim it down to size. This tree has been estimated to 60 - 80years old......:-)

26 Dec, 2011

Wow! That's very interesting! A 60 -80 year old olive tree here would be more than 50ft/16m tall and have a massive trunk.

Does it produce olives?

26 Dec, 2011

There's different types of olive trees, and of course, the climate will also effect the growth. It did not have any olives when i bought it last year, but will keep an eye this Summer......

27 Dec, 2011

It's probably best it doesn't produce fruit...as they can be very messy.

28 Dec, 2011

I see what you mean.

28 Dec, 2011

Huge olive trees are commonly planted around apartment buildings and they make such a mess on the sidewalks.

29 Dec, 2011

I didn't know that, thanks for the information. We learn something every day....

29 Dec, 2011

Yes, large trees produce thousands of olives.

31 Dec, 2011

Oooooooooh love your pots and how you have hung them excellent idea!!

23 Feb, 2012

Thank you so much Ladygardene. These are a couple of garden railings that I bought at our local tip. I welded them together also welded some hooks, lick of paint and job done. I guess we call it recycling hey :-)

hey louis, love the olive and pots. I've got some wall pots this year and have got some strong trellis to attach them to on our fence. Any tips for how best to hang/attach the pots?
I am thinking of using wire which should only come loose when using tools/pliers. It gets really windy in the area they are going to be hanging up in, as the wind gets channelled up between my house and next door. Any tips you can give me would be much appreciated!
Hope that your olive tree is still thriving!

Hi Sarahm,
You didn't say how many pots you're going to hang on the trellis. Wall pots are heavy once you get the soil and plant in them, and also remember it will be much heavier once you water them.
Yes, the best way to secure the pots on the trellis is by using wire, and wind the wire a few times, and also secure the trellis with good size screws.
Please post some pictures for us to see. If you need to know anything else, don't hesitate to drop me a line.
Good luck :-)
