Oh please, Mushy, don't feed them milk! They'll drink it all right, but they can't digest it very well, it'll probably give them a dreadful stomach upset and possibly end up killing them. Water, by all means, and they'll eat meat or dried dog or cat food, even the tiny ones, but not milk! Bread's not great for them, either.
We have discovered a dreadful tragedy ourselves this morning with our own hedgehogs: I went down to the cellar for the first time this morning since I got back on Thursday evening, to fill a watering can, and discovered that OH had removed the cover from the sump under the tap. Some of you may remember we put it over deliberately when we discovered a hoglet crying and shivering in a couple of centimetres of cold water about a month ago, having fallen in and been unable to get out. Well this time, it was an adult, and OH hadn't heard it's cries. We had our first frost last night, and heaven knows how long the poor thing had been down there, I just hope it wasn't the mother of the babies we've been seeing, but it was dead. I haven't forgiven him and we aren't speaking.

Milk gives them diarrhea and they die, cat food and plenty of water please.

Thanks for the comments and info fortunatly it was more interested in chewing the plate than the milk but don't worry will never put milk out again

It's very cute! We don't have hedgehogs here in California...and they're illegal have as a pet.

No we don't keep them as pets i was very surprised to see it i don't know if it had lost its mum or something as lots get run over here in the country side..
There are very cute but covered with very sharp spines and fleas so really don't want a pet one ;o))))

Golly I didn't know you shouldn't give them milk I have done in the past , we live and learn ! we often have them in our garden , that is such a sad story Gattina ~ sob,sob ~ :o(

I haven't seen a baby in about 15 years i think see many adults

I am told that if you see them during the day time there is something wrong with them. I rescued a couple from a playing field in the daytime to try and keep them safe and get them better but they did die. So I suppose it is correct, probably their parent had died and they were looking for food, they were very tiny and didn't stand much chance. Especially difficult for them when it is as dry as it has been (well around us it is v.dry) as they do not find the worms and slugs etc to feed on and then they are underweight for the hibernation period. I have a book which says they eat bread and milk but I do know that is not what they should be given, it makes them ill. There is a hedgehog rescue centre in Lincolnshire they do a lot of good looking after the poorly ones and then release them back into the wild if they get to be strong enough. Lovely pictures though really lovely creatures, I do like hedgehogs. Thank you for showing them.

I believe that there is a growing number of hedgehog rescue centres in the UK, affectionately know as "St Tiggywinkles". We once took an abandoned nestful of hoglets there, having accidentally dug up their nest in a huge clump of razorgrass. Big guilt trip!

Paul, I am delighted to say we still have two youngish ones overwintering in our cellar. They have made themselves a little nest in a corner behind the pile of summer tyres, and just occasionally come out to eat cat food and drink water. It isn't really cold enough for them to go into full hibernation yet.

I have always had them in gardens ever since i can remember it seams odd some people don't see them :o)
