Thanks everyone. Yes, that's a ditch, which leads back to the brook. It works as an overflow should we get lots of rain. When we've had bad flooding the ditch cant take the amount of water and the mowed grass area is covered too. At the moment all calm and water cress is growing along the bottom.

Thanks Amy, even have watercress growing in the brook, a sure sign of lack of rain, brook only just running.
