It must be the epsom salts!! They looks soo healthy. My MMerrill, together with Tickled Pink are still performing well..but not as good as this!

I'm sorry, I must be missing something that you all know about - Epsom salts??

27 Oct, 2011

Epsom Salts (Magnesium Sulphate) has been used by generations of gardeners and some, like me believe certain plants like roses grow much better with a dose of Epsom Salts. I was told to use it on my ailing roses over 30 years ago. I think the clay limits the up take of magnesium so I add a good hand full around each bush with the fertilizer ( it works better if applied dry around the base of the plant watering it in means most is lost).
You can now buy ES fertilizer in GC but I think thats far to expensive and just buy tubs from the super market.

You learn something new every day on this site! Thank you Denise!

Your very welcome G.

Actually, Denise, after I read this yesterday, I went and had a look at the big bag of fertiliser pellets we were recommended to put round our young fruit trees back in the spring, and the translation reads "conditioning mix", and THAT contains MgSO4, so perhaps it is commoner than I realised in this clay-ey area.

Hint drc:
I have to deal with clay soil in this area and the very best amendments to add are lava-sand, compost, and green-sand in the basic bed prep. Sprinkle in a dose of dry molasses at 20 lbs per 1000 sq ft, every season to rev up the native microbes and that nasty clay will turn into "chocolate cake" looking soil in about 2 years ;-)

Gosh, N2O, that sounds wonderful. I have never heard of lava-sand, or green sand, or dry molasses, and I am absolutely certain there are not something you would ever find here in Italy. I doubt you would find them easily in the UK either. Could they be available under a different name, do you suppose? Compost we do as a matter of course, and tons of well-rotted manure.
I've just had a look at your fascinating profile - What is a "Scotts Junkie", please?

HI N2O, I could not find either sand for sale in the UK except through the USA. Green sand was 5Lbs for $10 and Lava was 40lbs for $9 exclusive of tax and plus shipping seems very expensive to me? Dry Molasses was even more costly so I dont think its going to catch on over here!
