I have a question Crissue. I really would like one of these but I have been a bit put off by reading that they produce suckers and have to be kept under control. Have you found this to be true?

They do sucker Frybo. I had one, mine would throw up suckers into my gravel bed which was not a problem, just chop them off and pull them up. but if you have a lawn it needs thinking about. I love them but they can be a bit of bother.

Frybo, they do sucker, but the trick is not to prune them hard - if you do, the sucker production increases dramatically.

They do Frybo...we don't prune our two..What I find worse is the seed heads, as soon as they drop, I get rid of them in the rubbish...otherwise millions of babies...you can get them out just the same way as you would any other weed...:))

This is lovely....bought a little one earlier in the year. It doesn't look very healthy!
The leaved didn't turn...they just fell!! Have scraped the bark and still green so have my fingers crossed.

It will be fine Scottish, settling in. It looks good bare anyway.

Yes but it is well worth it, mine is the same or should I say was, here today gone tomorrow. lol. amazing while they last though. I find them invasive if you chop them back a lot, but eh ho keep cutting the suckers off and you get an amazing display to make up for your hard work controlling them. Certainly is an amazing colour Crissue.

Thanks to all who answered my query about this plant - the jury is still out - have to decide if I want it enough to not mind spending time keeping it under control. Ooh decisions, decisions.

It has lovely velvety antlers all winter that you just want to stroke, then in spring you see the fat leaf buds bulging. then they send out this frond that is bright and as beautiful as any palm. Then in summer the flowers appear, at first they are not that much....but they grow and remind me of those feather plumes that dress horses wear on their heads. Autumn arrives and the tree sets it's self on fire...as above.

We inherited a big one when we moved here, but we brought with us the one above which we had in a pot as a youngster, and grew as a standard....and it snapped in strong winds, so its a shorter, but still a standard...I don't regret it Frybo...just choose carefully where you plant it..
Don't buy one... goodness, I get enough young ones come up around my big tree....I can replant one easily enough for next year, and they grow fairly fast too...

Crissue, would you say it grew well in a pot...and was happy ?

For the time it was in the Pot yes, it was a huge Pot too, but we knew we were moving from our other house, and we took a chance with a young self seeded one...I don't know to be honest how it would have fared, I don't see why not...I'll try anything once....:)))

My sis in law had one and it ruined the lawn! She put in a pot and every now and again trimmed the roots. Lasted about 5 years before she got fed up with doing it.
But yes the colour is stunning Crissue, lovely picture.

But that's why they go furry...to compensate.

I know Pimpernel, but they end up dry and hard after, but we get the enjoyment still. :))))
