A great clumping bamboo with excellent form and shape. Hard as nails - she sailed through the last 2 severe winters with no problems. This is probably the most vigorous of the commonly available Fargesias. It can easily be divided every couple of years as it sizes up very quickly. scabrida's only been around since the mid to late nineties so no one's too sure of the final height. I reckon 4m is about the best you will get after 5 or so years in favourable conditions.

I love them, but after 2 years this strikes me as a lot of growth? yet I gather it is non invasive?

It's a very vigorous clumper and isn't suitable in every situation - however its manageable and is quite shallow rooted. The original plant was bought 3 years ago. The picture is one half of the first division I did 2 years ago. The other half I use as a stock plant and its already produced 7 or 8 divisions.

Hi Borinda, I wrote a blog recently call 'The way it was, part2' I dug up a very large bamboo, just as you described there.. it looked big but the root was quite shallow, I managed to dig the whole root plus soil out in less than 5 minutes, I then split it up..got 5 plants out of it which I used to create an arch. I have bamboos scattered around the garden, non have invaded other plants as yet, most of them are age 6 to 7 yrs old.

I really love bamboo. I used to have a very large garden in France, where I had some bamboo in various places (protected of course to stop it spreading) but now I have a little pimple of a garden in the U.K., I have no room for it. It is very frustrating. I love the sound of bamboo when there is a light breeze.

Gorgeous classic bamboo shape..the repeated pattern of three leaves facing down and the uprights of the colms...love it!

Think I may need to look for this one. How does it pot up, I 'm thinking it would make a good sun blocker on the sundeck. Pots all in a row to make a screen.????
