Wow that's stunning!

Such a beautiful colour, I think... :))

This one is just growing wild at the edge of the creek, by the boat club, J! It is similar to the ones which grow in France but the flower is larger and more delicate...and the shade of pink is just amazing...

Wow! Steal it! lol send it to me! haha ;)
21 Nov, 2011
I have a feeling that now the rain has stopped and the sun has come out, there will be all sorts of beautiful flowers appearing!

COll!
21 Nov, 2011
oops cool lol

I have seen this for sale in a catalogue....might have been Parkers. Isn't it stunning...not for here though I think...perhaps on the Isles of Scilly....

Yes, I think you're right, KS...there are some (though not many) in the Charente, although not a patch on this. They like it warm and wet!

It's gorgeous.....so delicate looking :)

Beautiful Karen!!
Sorry not to comment on all but getting dizzy trying to get caught up after only 2 days!

Very nice, mine finished flowering long ago, roll on next summer.
21 Nov, 2011
I have two young plants coming along from seed - lets hope that I can get them to bloom!
21 Nov, 2011
Good luck with them, Meanie :)
23 Nov, 2011
It looks like Albizia saman.

Karenfranceafrica:
I was looking at the leaves on this plant. It looks more like
Calliandra surinamensis. They're all blooming now here in San Diego, also.
27 Nov, 2011
I think you're right, Delonix :)
But they're so similar, aren't they?
28 Nov, 2011
The flowers are similar. However, Calliandra surinamensis doesn't grow as tall as Albizia julibrissin.
28 Nov, 2011
Ah! These are bushes rather than trees...
28 Nov, 2011
Yes, it typically grows like a v-shaped large shrub to 25ft/7.7m tall.
29 Nov, 2011
It's really lovely, I sit and look at them whilst sipping my wine at the water's edge...
...well, maybe 'water' doesn't quite describe it, since you can't see through it and you wouldn't want to fall in!

Karenfranceafrica:
Do Albizia julibrisin trees grow there? It becomes a giant tree here in San Diego, if it's not trimmed back regularly. It actually grows very large in most of California.
Do many Calliandra species grow there?
Here's some of my Calliandra species pics:

Albizia julibrissin trees grow in France around where we live, usually near lakes or rivers...but they don't get very big.
I think it would be lovely in a pot (next to the fence in your new area, J?)...but I think you would have to protect it in the winter! :)
Having now seen the difference between Albizia and Calliandra, I doubt that I've ever seen Calliandra growing in Europe, Delonix...well, it might do in Greece or Southern Italy, where it is really warm and no frosts...
30 Nov, 2011
Calliandra species would grow where you live in Nigeria, though. They do like warm subtropical or tropical climates...depending on the species.
Albizia julibrissin grows to 55ft/17m tall and the spread is usually a lot wider.
30 Nov, 2011
Gulp! Not in SW France, they don't, Delonix...they're quite small, neat trees there!
The Calliandra in the photo, here, is growing in the wild on the edge of the creek. We live in a small 'oasis' in Lagos Port :)
30 Nov, 2011
I would have thought that Albizia julibrisin would grow large in SW France. It's a really hardy tree...it not a Delonix regia tree. lol! :>) You most likely see a lot of Delonix regia trees there in Africa, correct?
Calliandra species grow wild there?
My neighbor's Calliandra surinamensis and haematocephala are in full bloom now.

Just googled Delonix regia - gorgeous!! And, coincidentally, have just been spotting them starting to bloom here...wondered what they were...
There are just so many plants here which can't have been deliberately planted...at least not where they've ended up... It's difficult to explain but I suppose that it's a bit like pushing the jungle back!! :)

Here's my Delonix regia (Royal Poinciana) pics:

Really, really beautiful! You've got one photo of a small tree growing by a fence... Any idea how old it is, D?
2 Dec, 2011
I think it's 12 or 13 years old.
2 Dec, 2011
I've just spent the weekend in 8 hectares of landscaped gardens, D...full of Delonix regia (and all sorts of other wonderful things)! They are still hanging with old seed pods and just coming into bloom...amazing to look at... :))
5 Dec, 2011
Are you going into the dry season? Delonix regia blooms in the dry season in subtropical and tropical climates.
5 Dec, 2011
Yes, Delonix, the dry season has only just begun here...quite strange because it begins in the southern states like Botswana in March/April...
They tell me that it was an exceptionally wet and extended rainy season, here, this year (it has been getting that way for the past few years) and are blaming 'global warming'. We've only had two rain free weeks so far...
6 Dec, 2011
Since the dry season has just begun, you should start seeing many more interesting flowering plants appear, soon.
7 Dec, 2011
It's happening! I love it!! :)))
