The Kakariki

The Kakariki

Here is another of the lovely birds native to New Zealand. The Kakariki is now only found in certain parts of the South Island & it is on the brink of extinction. A major conservation breeding programme is desperately trying to prevent this from happening, but not looking good. So many of our beautiful native birds are on the endangered list, especially the flightless ones.

What a blast from the past...I used to breed these gorgeous, friendly birds...in fact the last clutch of babies, I hand reared...you've really stirred some memories there...What a terrible shame, such a lovely bird, I think it was about 30 years ago, I bought my first pair...I do hope the breeding programme is successful, it would be terrible to lose such a beautiful natured Bird...

Wow ... that's amazing. Did you live in NZ then, or were they exporting the kakariki outside of NZ in those days. It would be a dreadful shame to lose one of our native bird species, & we have several which are now on the endangered list & a couple which are very close to extinction. Too many tree-climbing predators killing off the babies in the nest .... possums & rats do that. Stoats & ferrets get the fledgings on the ground. Tragic when a species is lost to the world.

Hi Dwyllis, to answer your first question....No sadly I haven't had that pleasure of spending time in NZ, and the pair I bought were bred in UK which is where I lived at the time...I'm almost sure they were being exported in those days...
It would be awful to lose such wonderful gentle birds....what other Birds are on the endangered list...and is this through the sam predator problem...
I used to keep a lot of Birds years ago, had a big Aviary, and also one or two Parrots in my time too...We now just have a Canary and a Button Quail, sharing a cage...That's my limit, because of the Dust....
Lovely talking to you...:)))
