Gosh!

7 Dec, 2011

Do you think it is a giant poinsettia, J?

7 Dec, 2011

Doubt it,K,but what do i know about tropical plants.....the leaves don't seem right to be a poinsettia.
Looking again, the bracts are very similar!

Sorry,repeated myself!!!!

Lol!!
That's what I thought, J...it's about 10 ft tall so I couldn't see close up - even with my glasses!

Lovely colour,Karen, whatever it is..I like it very much.:o)

It is lovely,I agree,Bloomer......Fancy such a height! Your knowledge on tropical plants will be immense,K.

Trawled the internet in my usual way...couldn't find anything like it, Bloomer.

From a distance they look like huge cabbage roses...

Knowledge completely useless back in Blighty, J
...unless I get a very large conservatory! :)
(probably best not to mention this for a while yet...)

Karenfranceafrica:

I'm so jealous! Mine died this past summer from a major bug infestation! :>(

By the way, this is not Euphorbia pulcherrima, it's Mussaenda philippica 'Doña Luz'...which is in the coffee family (Rubiaceae) lol! :>)

Aahh! The gardener told me its common african name today...but I've forgotten it already!

He doesn't like it because it tends to grow really tall here, but is very straggly - probably not its ideal climate?

12 Dec, 2011

It's an African native. It's a gorgeous flowering shrub, which needs to be cut back after flowering to keep it compact. It likes regular fertilizer to keep it growing well, also.

Note: The climate there is perfect for this plant.

In that case, Delonix...I think it can go on my list! :))

Do you know if it will take easily from a cutting?

14 Dec, 2011

It should grow very easily from cuttings. That's how they're grown here in s. Cal (when you can find them for sale) and s. Florida.

Oh GOOD! :))
