Winter Pecans

Winter Pecans

January on my walk in La Verkin Utah. Pecan is a popular tree here, but the nuts are not harvested, more a recreation. So most of the trees where filled with ripe pecans, leaving the feeling of abundance. We ate a few of course.

Pecans? Delicious! Why don't they harvest them?

THey were mostly older tree, in the neighborhood for a long time, and lining the streets mostly. Completely ornamental. Seems anything that falls is fair game, but no one is going so far as shaking the nuts out and collecting them up.

I know, I balked at the disuse of it all at first. But I do know that pecan harvesters have a big tractor that grips the trunk and shakes the tree for hours when they harvest, so I understand just waiting for those that fall, in an ornamental sense. I wouldn't be out shaking my tree for an hour to pick up fallen pecans for a pie.

poor tree! the roots must be super-strong!!

I know. That is just how they harvest pecan. They have a very deep taproot. Planting them here requires a well dug around the trunk so you can target water to the deep roots.

perhaps i should use that idea for some of the drier parts of my garden??

I've formed a small well around the roots of a plant but only those that require wetter condition or root deep. Some things will want the crown high even though they like damp roots and I wouldn't do it for them. Plant by plant again I'd say, a judgement call.

I am sure you are right.

We gathered up some of the fallen ones, fresh and tender as could be. I don't know that I've had such good pecans. I brought one home in its shell. Thank you Marguerite.

No, these were just wonderful. Rich and light. The hard shell was still on the tree, popped open and this inner shell was all that contained it. You could crack through with your fingers. Maybe harvest season is early and they are opened with heat. They really have to shake to crop these guys.
