Doing their best in the snow today!

Yes, Sticki, they put up with a lot, but seem to come through all of it. Erythroniums are my favourite spring flowers. (I was drooling over the picture of them you posted yesterday!)

they were amazing werent they
~ i only discovered erythroniums last year, and this year they seem to be popping up all over the garden ~ i thought i only had about 3 plants!! they must like this shady garden.

Mine are in deep shade and they spread, which is always a bonus, isn't it?
15 Apr, 2012
absolutely!! need more plants like them.

I love them too, nice to read about them here, I did not know much about them, since they spread and like shade I shall be transferring some of mine in some shady parts of the garden... they can do their thing there. :)))

You've had snow ? ! :o(((
How horrible. I hope it clears soon. Mind you, it's very cold here aswell.

They should do well in your shade beds, Michaella. Good idea to shift them there after they have done their thing this year.
Hywel, it's not unusual to get snow here in April, but this year it is just such a shock to the garden after our record high temps in March. Still, it is surviving amazingly well.

Oh my goodness, and I thought it was cold here!

If they like it, they will certainly reward you, HB. They flower (here, anyway) conveniently between the daff time and the tupil time, so that's another plus.

Blooming snow...I hope it goes away soon W. We've had none here. A little hail but no snow. They did say we would get some tomorrow I think, but I'm not having it:) It's a little warmer in the sunshine than of late, but as soon as the sun goes behind a cloud it's freezing! Reminds me of a spring about ...ooooh, it must be about 14 years at least ago. We went to Peebles Hydro with the children and it was about the same time because the Rugby 7s at Melrose were either just over or just about to happen and it snowed that week and we were in the swimming pool in the hotel and outside we could see the snow falling. It was just like this that year.

Makes an otherwise relatively benign winter seem extreme and very long!

Snow!! Oh not still - so sorry you had this horrid stuff - we had flakes of it in showers down here - and hard frosts tonight - totally sick of it!!
15 Apr, 2012
Well, Gattina, Karen and Paul - I suppose this is the downside of choosing to live where I do. But I musn't complain, given the beautiful scenery all around me, which makes up for everything else. Just makes gardening a little bit more challenging, that's all.

:))) been a real cold Month this year - at least some good sun though :))

We have had hail that looked like snow , it's been bitterly cold .......
15 Apr, 2012
Yes I remember snow in April here, but very rarely.
15 Apr, 2012
we had Graupel which is the soft hail that looks like snow too - frost tonight below freezing again :(

I remember once when it snowed on my birthday (June 8th) and SETTLED. That was a few years ago now, in Cheshire, and a few years ago we were taken by complete surprise by a snowstorm as we were driving in the foothills of the Alps in Austria, and that was mid-June. Honestly, you can't rely on anything!

Graupel - never heard that term, Paul. My Orkney friends call hail 'hellibas' meaning balls of hail. Great words, both of them.
No, Gattina, you can't rely on weather! You certainly don't want to be having any more snow - you had enough over your winter to last for years. And snow in June - good heavens! I can't think offhand when our latest snow has been, but we've had it later than this before now.

We had a real hard frost again last night - really fed up with fleecing
16 Apr, 2012
Well, oddly enough, we didn't have frost and the snow is all gone this morning. In fact, it's looking relatively benign.
Hope your plants are all ok. It's worrying, isn't it, this crazy weather, with the buds all bursting?
16 Apr, 2012
We had a right freeze last night - minus 3 !! Killed astilbes which "were" almost flowering - now cut back
16 Apr, 2012
Sounds like, once again, you have similar weather to what we have here...just a week or so later!
Have seen snow in every month except July! Then again, that was a bit farther north. Lovely changeable weather here...cool winds...patchy cloud...frogs are singing in the evenings. Sadly mosquitoes and blackflies will be out soon.
It's been very dry so far...not enough rain. The spring wildflowers are just emerging from the leaf carpet in the forest. the erythronium we have here we called Adder Tongues, as kids. they have speckled leaves and last only a short time.

Wow, they are so pretty. Obviously , they don't mind the cold!
26 Apr, 2012
And they don't mind the rain, either! In fact they appear to be loving it and throwing up lots of new buds.

Such a pretty photo Oji.

Thanks, GM. They did so well this year, despite the snow.
