Took some Pines for you 7 found him there by accident.

It didn't register as a cone, thought it was some kind of wasp/bee home.

looking down on the wasp its almost like a motorbike ~ can you see the handlebars?

I see that Sticki! The thorax is the petrol tank and the abdomen the rear fairing. The compound eyes are the dials, and the bumps on the head the switches.
Pimp, it's not a wasp but a motorbike stuck in a pinecone.

i hope he can reverse without too much damage to the handlebars.

I wouldn't like to get that close to such a large wasp, Pimm's - have you magnified him to alarm us?!

this wasp is probably gnawing at the pine cone to turn the wood into pulp to make it's nest with to lay it's eggs. It's probably a queen as wasps don't store any food for the winter to feed their brood with or the workers come to that!.

Its cousin has already gnawed away tiny strips of wood from our shed . . . we now have a stripey shed! Their nests are amazing works of art (and I know you'd love to see a picture, but I'm a techno-prat, sorry :)))

My Ex brother in law worked worked for Rentokil and used to bring some of the most ellaborate nests home to give to the local schools. Works of art indeed.

Glad to know you've seen one Pimm's :)

when we moved into this bungalow there was a huge nest in the loftspace. Wasps do a lot of good even though most people hate them. They rid the garden of pests to take away to feed the grubs in their nest.
