This very tall African Tulip Tree is in full bloom in Balboa Park, San Diego, CA. Photo taken May 3, 2012.

African Tulip tree is a very tropical tree native to the wet equatorial (Congo) region of Africa. Are you possibly thinking of Liriodendron tulipifera, which is a very hardy tree?
If you're thinking of the Liriodendron tulipifera, then it's not even closely related.

Liriodendron tulipifera is a beautiful tree, also. However, the flowers of the African Tulip tree are much larger.
