You have no idea the amount of bees in just this one bee hive......my heart was racing!!! The sound they made when I turned the smoke on them.....I'm not sure I want to be the bee keepers helper anymore!!!!

Oh WOW , That is jam packed full , my son has been on a short Bee keeping course ,I'm not sure what his next step is going to be !

That is just the front of the frame Amy....
You will be amazed at how delicious the honey is!!! I hope your son decides to keep bees.
We started with one hive, one level.....now we have five hives with two levels each and hubby is adding another level this week......

Wow! That will be a lot of honey hopefully!?

We save honey for the whole year, give some to my parents, in-laws and to close friends. This year we should have loads!
18 May, 2012
Wow! That's a lot of bees. You can start a honey business.
:>)
We had lots of problems with bees in my neighborhood over the years. One year I had a bee hive in the attic. Also, three other neighbors had to have bees removed from outer walls of their home.

My hubby laughs at me....he says I hate giving my honey away and he's right. I looooooove honey. I make sure I have a years supply first. ;0}
We "try" to keep it under control. There are ways to prevent swarms from leaving the hives.

Wow!!! One year's supply of honey. I can't imagine having that much honey. I hardly use honey.
How to prevent the swarms from leaving?
22 May, 2012
We eat a lot of honey. ;o)
We learned that rather than wait for the swarm to leave and then capture it a put it in a new hive.....you remove the new Queen and a few frames and you have a new hive without having to chace after swarms. Hubby is going to try it.
I tasted Royal jelly the other day.....I can't say I like the taste of it...
22 May, 2012
Agree, truly amazing!

There's definitely something going on with the bees this year, Alex. My friends' hives are the same...bursting at the seams.
23 May, 2012
Thanks Sheilar.
That is great Karen.....we need our bees. I have people asking me if I sell my honey.....I might this year if we make enough.

Tell em about the Honey Mummy, came straight into my head off the sugar puffs advert..I bet it tastes gorgeous and good for the cholesterol levels. I'm not sure you would get me that close suited up or not..
24 May, 2012
One friend went to take a frame out and found that it was full of baby bees (I can't remember the correct terminology) instead of honey. Luckily, she had another empty hive...so she got half of them to move in there. Two hives out of one!
25 May, 2012
Bill,
I'm not sure I want to go that close again very soon (even suited up).......I'm going to have to at some point.
The honey is delicious and just a little different every year.
I remind the kids have at least teaspoon everyday....
Lucky for us not cholesterol yet. ;o)))
25 May, 2012
That's how we started Karen....from one single level hive with a Queen and swarm from our friends hives.
My hubby has two new empty hives ready......
25 May, 2012
You'll have a cottage industry in the making, Alex! :)
25 May, 2012
lol...lol... We live in a tourist area so we have to be extra careful. I think people might freak out is they see 20 or so bee hives in my back yard. Especially when we open them up and they circle around us......;o)
25 May, 2012
Lolol! But I can also see the shelves with little pots of honey products with hand-written labels and bunches of dried wild oregano...tourist heaven! ;))
25 May, 2012
I think I might have to look into that idea!!!!!!!!!!!!
25 May, 2012
Yup!!!! :))))
My friend is a member of GoY...she's called 'Beelady'...and she's a font of knowledge, bee-wise - she knows exactly how to deal with swarms and often goes out and collects them...but I'm not sure if she's still active, GoY-wise...

Lovely picture Alexandramc, my husband used to be the biggest Bee Farmer in the south of England, we had 5oo hives dotted all over the place, health reasons we had to give up, I now have to buy honey.......
30 May, 2012
Thank you Stripes. 500....that is a lot of work! Bet you miss having your own honey....
30 May, 2012

3 Jun, 2012
I bet it was....I don't think I would have had the courage....
4 Jun, 2012
I love the honey so when I'm asked to help.....I gear up. I'm thinking about buying special trousers that are really thick, then I won't be so scared.

I read an article in our evening newspaper last night about a swarm of bees in Didsbury Manchester and it reminded me of this blog..
