You have lots of Clems, Cinders! I have Warsaw Nike and Rosemoor...both are this deep wine-red colour. They have buds only...can't wait for them to start. I planted them together when we moved to the new place and now I don't know which is which! Also was hopeful for a new Tangutica that I found last summer..but it looks like it didn't make it. I think the temperature fluctuations in March/April sealed it's fate.

Thats a shame Lori, you have the right place and plenty of room for a tangutica too. I must have at least twenty clematis , have given up counting ! Love them all. My garden is only small, so have to look for things to grow upwards ! My Dr.Ruppel is the one out best at the moment, but several more almost there.

Must check out Dr. Ruppel! I love them too...and usually I only buy plants which I'm sure will thrive. Clems are the only plant that I've made an exception for...but they are hardy here and i find the more I worry and fuss the less successful they are. So recently, with the move, I've decided that I shall give them the best spot and the best start I can and the rest is up to them. Nature will weed out the unworthies and the rest are all success! I'm sure you don't have to worry too much about hardiness in Wiltshire. I envy you that.

I must say that I personally don't have a lot of trouble with them, occasionally they get the wilt, but if you cut them back they will usually throw another shoot from the bottom. I think the answer is to plant them nice and deep and keep the roots cool.

Yes I've heard that!...they like their heads in the sun and their feet in the shade! also heard that they make good companions for roses. I have a spot that I'm going to develop for roses (microclimate sort-of-thing) so perhaps I'll relocate the clems when it's at the planting stage. I thought I had lost my C.Gillian Blades..but she's back and the first to bloom.

That should look great then Lori, and if it is in the sun then perhaps a slab or something to keep the roots shaded, because roses like the sun don't they.
