My youngest grandson is 15 tomorrow so I have spent today making his birthday cake. He likes chocolate!

I am pleased with it! It is a huge cake, 10 inches across and about a million calories I should think! I'd be happy to make one for your 15th, Sticki :)

You were right, Carole, not much left by the end of the day! Various friends and neighbours dropped in for a share during the day so I was pleased I made a big one. Grandson described the cake as 'epic' which I think means it was good. I will certainly use the recipe again, it was so easy :)
Sounds like some GoYers are like the Queen and have two (or more) birthdays :)

That is some cake Gee, truly epic. A chocoholics paradise cake. Someone once described a close friend of mine as 'everyone's favourite auntie'.....she never stopped baking her way into people's hearts. That makes you everyone's favourite granny. I remember your choclaty mug cake, which I've made several times now in the large Mr Grumpy mug for visitors, and the've gone away with the recipe....with varying degrees of success.

This chocolate cake is very similar to the Mug Cake, Dorjac, just bigger! It has the same ingredients plus golden syrup. I am very lucky that I am so close to my grandchildren and they feel they can turn up on the doorstep at any time :)

Since the cake has gone can we now have the recipe. I'm loving your chocolate quicky cake in a mug and will be having a houseful in August when one this size would be great. Epic is definitely a compliment. I can hear him saying more Gran more.

Recipe:
175g Self raising flour
2 Tbsp Cocoa Powder
1 Tsp Bicarbonate soda
150g Caster sugar
2 Eggs Beaten
150 ml (1/4 pint) Sunflower oil
150 ml (1/4 pint) Semi skimmed milk
2 Tbsp Golden syrup
For the Coating and filling:
75g Unsalted butter
175g Icing Sugar
3 Tbsp Cocoa Powder
Drop of Milk
1.Pre-heat oven to 180ÂșC/350F/Gas Mark 4. Grease and line two 18cm (7 inch) sandwich tins.
2. Sieve the flour, cocoa and Bicarbonate of Soda into a bowl. Add the sugar and mix well.
3. Make a well in the centre and add the syrup, eggs, oil and milk. Beat well with electric whisk until smooth.
4. Spoon the mixture into the two tins and bake for 25 - 30 minutes until risen and firm to the touch. Remove from oven, leave to cool before turning out onto a cooling rack.
5. To make your butter icing, place the butter in a bowl and beat until soft. Gradually sift and beat in the icing sugar and cocoa powder then add enough milk to make the icing fluffy and spreadable.
6. If the cake has risen a little to high then use a serrated knife to even off the top, now sandwich the two cakes together with the butter icing and cover the sides and the top of the cake with more butter icing.
To make the 10inch birthday cake I made two batches of cake mixture and cooked each in a 10 inch loose bottomed cake tin, reducing the cooking temp to 170. Each cake took about 35 minutes to cook.

Have just read through the last bit and am not sure if it's very clear! I cooked all the mixture that makes two 7 inch cakes in one 10 inch cake tin. Then did the same again to make the two layers. Is that clearer?

I'm not long in from doing some gardening so have just found this recipe. Thank you very much. I will be trying it soon. I'll let you know how I get on. I had not used oil to replace the butter or marg before and am liking it a lot. Sticki I think for the seven inch cake 2 batches = 2 layers but you need 4 batches, 2 in each of the 10" tins for two layers. I have to go to bed because it is 11.57pm but it is making me feel positively hungry.

You don't need 4 batches, Scotsgran! Just use the recipe as given but put it all into a 10 inch tin. I haven't got two 10 inch tins so just repeated the process to make 2 layers. I have made a mess of this, haven't I? Sorry.

No need for you to be sorry Gee. I do apologise, I did not read the original recipe properly, my mistake not yours. But I had been working hard in the garden all day and it was nearly midnight. You definitely did not make a mess, that cake looks fantastic. I'll be having a go at it when I get some cooking oil.

Or maybe two in my case. I got the oil and find I have no cocoa now. Its such a store necessity I can't believe I've run out, but its all those choc cakes I've been making lol.
