Goldfish

Goldfish

We used to have 30 - 40 fish in our small pond - all bred from the original 5 we bought in the first place. However after several years of herons, cats & natural dying off we now have NONE!! We haven't bought anymore, thought we would let the frogs & newts etc take over!

Oh dear... wish I could send you some of my little prisoners... I had dozens as well and they died off in a freak end of winter storm. All I had left were three little guys that I'd placed in the over-wintering tank of a nymphaea. They have produced 15 offspring...but it's been pillar to post, as we moved 18 mos. ago...and it's been dicey for them ever since. Just made a tank in the side garden...digging is troublesome here..lots of huge boulders and gravel to contend with. I'm too old for that! Now it's just a wooden frame with a butyl liner...poor things. they'll spend the coming winter exactly where they are now. lots of frogs here and toads too...I'm thinking you have the right idea...but what to do with my buddies?

Thats exactly what we've done, Shirl. We have 20 resident pigeons around us who roost in the trees. One year the pond was that black with them sitting above it, everything died including the plants. Fortunately it hasn't happened since and my hubby loves the wild life and now the ponds are just for that. We get loads of frogs and newts now. We have 2 cats ( getting old now) and they don't bother anything including birds. I don't think they can be bothered now!

We bought two Goldfish for our Pond Shirl about three years ago, and luckily, they must be one sex or the other, as no babies have appeared, and they do breed young...so we're happy with our two...
