It nice to know the names Yorkshire, Thanks TT.
Hi Lilc Clay soils are usually rich in plant nutrients and they also retain much of the fertilizers that are added. However, it is sticky when wet, and forms hard lumps, which are impossible to break down when dry.
I find in hot dry weather I get deep, cracks which can tear the roots apart and the plant dies of thirst. So its very much trial and error, loose some while others survive. This almost happened to my Rowan a couple of years ago, had to leave the hose on it for 24 hours.

I dug out a new bed yesterday Denise. Was like shovelling into concrete, then when I soaked it, you know it, sticky and heavy!
I have cracks right now...never knew that about tearing the roots. Thanks for the info.

Hope it helps Lilc, my front is solid clay and the lavenders do really well there but they are old now and I plan to replant this autumn but that means digging ugh.
