Pretty planting!

Looks very inviting. Good idea to keep the steps low. I love that gravel in the background. We don't do that so much because of the maintenance problem. We have too much awful looking slate, and marble.

Re. maintainence Wells, it has to be done right. This 'was' done right, with a good permeable membrane to block out light and prevent weeds. Then 3" of gravel on top finished the job. Sadly, we have since utilised some of the gravel in other areas and so it is now a bit thin and weeds have started to germinate in it. I need to top it up! But apart from that, it works a treat.

You have taste, Karen. I like it very much. What kind of wood is it?

30 Jul, 2012

I'm not entirely sure Katarina. They are new railway sleepers. I honestly can't remember what kind of wood they use to make these.

I see. Railway sleepers are used in our modern gardens, too. But they are quite expensive, aren´they? Those who do not have enough money, they buy stone imitations of wood here.
I like wood in gardens very much - in all ways of use.

Yes, you can get stone ones here, but not sure if they are any cheaper.....certainly easier to maintain, but I don't do anything to mine and I found a local supplier who is reasonably priced. I'll tell you what though, it was certainly a whole lot cheaper for us to build that gravel seating area ourselves than to get a landscaper to build a deck there (which was my original plan)! :D

The same here. I wanted to make Japan corner last year so I turned to landscaper. As it is a very small piece of land (2x1.5 metres) and he suggested just one pine and several grasses, my calculation was around 300 euros, but his was 1000 euros. So I made it myself.

I've just posted a pic of my pink Veronica, but yours is looking much nicer, sort of thicker
