Caterpillar

Caterpillar

One of the biggest ugliest caterpillars I've seen. Wasn't sure what it was so I didn't kill it. I looked it up and think it will turn into a polyphemus moth so I think I made a good call letting it live.

What is ugly on it, Paul? The picture has all colours of The United Colours of Benetton :))) For me inspirational :))

Most catarpillars turn into something lovely - Ugly Duckling syndrome??

Sort of, it's pretty for a moth at least haha. It will turn into a large tan moth with feathery antennae.

How do you know Rkwright? :)

amazing to think of the transformation of the caterpillar into a moth or butterfly.

I looked it up because I didn't recognize it. I knew it was either a Luna moth or Polyphemus moth but they look a lot alike. Yesterday when I checked on it, it had already made a cocoon.

:) Hope, you will keep us informed about transformation process :)) (or make a blog, that would be interesting...)

Staggers me how evolution came up with this trick! if creatures evolve through trial and error, best ones surviving, how the heck did it happen? how many variations on this didn't survive, and how did even the idea of it being a useful surivival mechanism come about in the first place???

It is very interesting topic, Fran. Once somebody knows a lot about it, he/she comes to conclusion, that he/she doesn´t know anything about it. Vice versa, the more you know, the more you are happy there is God (if you believe).
I think the greatest work which was done by scientists in recent 20 years was human gene mapping. I am dissappointed how the results were closed, shut down in a box. For instance - that our genetic composition only slightly differs from primitive creatures like bugs or frogs. That survival depends on ability of genetic materil to change. The most flexible genetic material have negroes so far. Well, I know, many things cannot be published, as they will shaken wished dogmas. :)))
