i just cant get my head around 73 degree sea water...british waters are around 60 at the hight of summer.

Typically, the California coastal waters stay cool to cold. San Diego and most of southern Cal. has a warmer water current which comes up from Mexico. The water temps can sometimes get up to 78 - 83 degrees. The last time the water temp got up to 83ºF/28.3ºC. in San Diego was back in July/August of 2006.

i havent been in the sea for years...im not brave enough..lol but plenty do, my kids love it but they mostly have wet suits on...

I don't blame you...I usually don't like to go into the ocean unless the water temp is above 75ºF/24ºC.

Over the last month I've been going to the beach once a week and walking along the water. I just have watch out for the jellyfish washing ashore by the thousands and lots of baby stingrays, they sting when stepped on. hundreds of people get stung by baby stingrays every year along the San Diego beaches.

i go to the beach to walk the dogs very often...we get jelly fish too sometimes hundreds. i like to see what the tide has washed up...

I was dodging the jellyfish along the shore like many other people. However, many people have been stung.

We have an unusual giant black jellyfish coming in on a warm current from the deep tropics. It's not very common and has only happened 4 time this decade.

oh my thats pretty even if it does sting....every now and then our beach is covered in dead ones that apparently are sensitive to the changing temperatures.

They are very pretty. There's many out in the ocean and lots of dead ones washing along the shore...which still can sting.

Black Nettles! just another symptom of climate change...I'm not surprised about the warmth of the currents off your coast, D1. Read about the effect of El Nino and La Nina...in EN years..the waters around the Galapagos, directly on the equator, are extremely warm, In fact, too warm according to some. If we have trouble with the oceans..we have trouble with everything else. It's a climate engine.

Typically, El Niño years are very unusual. We get a lot of fish from the deep tropics visiting the San Diego waters (that's not so unusual). The weather is usually very stormy. There's an El Niño brewing out in the Pacific Ocean. Not sure how strong it is . Strong to very ones affect the weather in California drastically and can cause catastrophic damage to the coast. You're very correct when saying the oceans are the climate engines.
