:~)) hi Lori, amazing insects, unfortunately due to 'issues' between me and camera i never got a close up, i'll try again tonight, maybe i can spot the difference between male n female Waddy.

Saw my first one this year here this morning in the garden, a youngster, and brown in colour...Usually we get a lot, and they are brilliant for snaring insects....have had some huge ones on Patrol especially last year...I quite like them myself, quite prehistoric looking...

didnt know the young ones were brown Crissue, i thought this was quite young one, not nearly as big as some i have seen here.

Sorry Resi didn't mean to mislead you, the Mantis changes colour by the conditions, prolonged dryness they are supposedly Brown, and moist conditions they are Green...The youngsters have no wings that's the only way I can tell...they can fly short distances, and have brilliant eyesight never bite humans, and the Female only eats her mate after long hours of mating lol if she's hungry....OH says there are different types of Mantis, and can be Adults at an inch up to a few inches long...Fascinating creatures..

i have never seen a brown one, ours are always are green. love your casual mention of the female mantis 'only' eating her mate if she gets tired from hours of mating if she is hungry......!!!
must do a bit of research on them.
