Hate them! ... I first saw them on a Forsythia ... knew something was munching on the leaves but unsure exactly what ... so I put a piece of white cloth beneath the shrub and shook out about a dozen of them ... yuk! ... Cannot understand why the adverts on the right of this page are showing Beehives though! .......

So that's what they look like...
...I wonder which poor critter I've been wreaking vengeance on then...?

Now we know folks....it's the first time I've noticed one - I took the pic then run indoors to google and find out what it was.
Bad news was that it was a bit lethargic - so am guessing just about dead as it was still in the same spot!!!!
Karen - you murderer - you've been killing the wrong beastie hen :))

Scottish
Even worse news they can lay a 1000 eggs and they are all female.( least they all lay eggs)They do have favorites that include Primroses,Fuchsias Begonias and Busy Lizzie. There are others thats just some I have encountered,if you find the grubs in pots bin the lot don't be tempted to put it on the waste heap.
They are also very crafty if you find a pot plant with leaf damage (its quite different to slugs V .Weevil always chew from the edge of the leaf) if you don't find the beetle try the pot next that has no damage thats where she will very often be.
How do I know I had thirty plus years chasing them when I grew many primroses.

and they come out at night sometimes so can be caught with a torch and they chew a semi neat semi circle in the leaf.
I discovered they really like the el cheapo compost in my containers, some of which I had been using a couple of years ago. It was peat based. I changed to a mix of my own stuff and put plain dry soil on the top. This they found alot less attractive and numbers reduced to almost nothing. I also treated my containers in trays in spring and about this time of the year and that has also worked well. This year I only found grubs in two pots and only lost one plant

Thanks you 2!!!! I've found the larvae before so knew they were about!! They did a good or should that be bad job on 2 of my Rhoddies last year. I binned 1 Mme Mason and have tried to keep my standard Red Jack going but it's not looking great.
Found this one on a leucothoe but no sign of leave damage in the vicinity.
I have yet to find them in pots probably much better food available in the borders

Thats not good you have them in the open ground a lot harder to control I would think.

Nasty. I use the liquid you water on to your pots. I did have an infestation in one Heuchera in the spring, and I removed all the grubs I could find and then planted it in the border with a good drenching of the larvae killer. It's taken all summer, but it is growing again now..the blighters had eaten almost all of the root! I once found one crawling up my kitchen wall! Eeeeeeeeugh!
