These are new to me Brian. Only bought it a few weeks ago because my little boy was fascinated by them every time we went to the nursery. I didn't think it would flower this year but what a nice surprise. I have it in a tank outside at the moment, it receives full sun. We've had a really hot and long summer this year that doesn't want to end!
The lady at the nursery told me this will be fine outside with no problems. Need a small pond now.......

i had these last year Brian, you need to over winter them in a tank or cool mud, but not outside as they are frost tender, they do have lovely flowers though.
nice pic Alex.

They're so lovely, don't you think, Alex?
A total nightmare in African waterways, though, it's so invasive! They were introduced there, from South America...and they really interfere with boat propellors and jets... You can't see the water for them...
But, if you keep it somewhere frost-free, it'll come back for your little boy next year! :)

Thanks Sl and Karen. Lucky for us we don't usually get frost. It's staying were it is unless frost comes our way then inside it goes.
The lady did mention that it spreads!!!

Alexandramou:
You do not EVER want to have this plant get into any of your ponds or lakes. It will be a HORRIBLE NIGHTMARE! Like what Karenfrance says. This was plant was accidentally released (many years ago) in the Delta in Northern California from around the eastern San Francisco Bay Area to Sacramento Area. It has taken over complete water ways. It can only be somewhat controlled..but not eradicated.

It's in a tank at the moment.....in a little "me" made pond hopefully next year.
I'll make sure to keep it away from ponds and lakes.

I didn't know they had a flower, the GC had them all summer but no flowers!

They probably need more sun Sticki. ;o)

I'm pretty sure someone from the UK posted a pic of this in bloom. Maybe you should give it a try this spring?.

That is so pretty , I didn't know they were coursing such a problem else where, that's worrying !

i think i might alex, if they have it back in the GC ~ surely i can just pull it out if it gets too big??
11 Oct, 2012
I didn't know either Amy. I'll make sure to keep them in my little pond. ;o)

My thought exactly Sticki.....my little boy won't like that idea though. I will just buy him a new one.

i think you can snap off a piece as it grows little baby ones doesnt it?
12 Oct, 2012
I really don't thing we have to worry about this plant Sticki. It spreads but like you say....snap (cut) off what you don't want. Just make sure what you don't want doesn't end up in our rivers and lakes. ;o)))
12 Oct, 2012
no lakes, rivers, ponds or any water near here!!
12 Oct, 2012
I will make sure to keep these beauties from spreading in my little end of the world then. ;o)

:-)

As said previously it can be shockingly invasive. It's not all bad though, as it is now being used in trials to clean waste industrial water.

It is beautiful though....

Alex not familiar with that one, do you keep it in an inside tank, they are available in the UK but can't say I have ever seen flowers, yours are very attractive.Read somewhere they have to dredge them out of the Suez Canal otherwise the shipping aren't able to get through
