Thanks! Most people here have a least one Bougainvillea in their yard.

They are great, as long as you never have to prune them back. The red and white look great together.

Having had Bougies in the ground at our last home, I can say that I would never willing plant one in the ground ever again. Of course they turn into monsters in the tropics, and are far better off in pots.

I would only grow one if I had a gardener to cut it back. lol! :>)

They turn into monsters even here in the subtropics! There's many very large ones along several freeways here. Also, they grow up very tall palms to 70ft (21m)

Yes I'm in full agreement with you there Andy. If I had a gardener I'd grow Bougies too! I've seen them grow up massive Gum trees and Palms as well.

What a beautiful garden your neighbour must have & a lovely view for you to look out on. Bourgies grew all over the place in The Gambia, where I lived for several years in the late 1980s. They formed huge hedges along roadsides ....usually various shades of pink, but sometimes reds & less commonly an orange colour.

Bougainvillea is an extremely common vine or shrub here.

I think they do grow in warmer areas of the North Island, & the upper tip of South Island. I have not seen them growing in the area I now live in, central North Island, as probably not hot enough in the summer, & too cool in the wi ter.

Some varieties grow in cooler climates. I've seen very large one in San Francisco flowering...it's typically the common purple variety, which is one of the most cool-tolerant.
