The many Fox Tail Agaves are just starting to put out their flower spikes. Photo taken Nov. 8, 2012 in Balboa Park, San Diego, CA.

We are able to grow some Agave here but this one is a no go, far too tender, but a most attractive one.

Does that part of the plant die off after flowering?

It grows like a weed here. This is one of the few species which has a trunk and it can branch out after it blooms.

Yes, the flower and top will die; however, it'll put out several branches on the side of the trunk. It can become bushy and very large.

This is an Agave not a foxtail. :>)
