I really thought I'd lost this in the winter of 2010, but it's back to it's old self now; shining a torch in the short December days...:o)

Is this what is called "Cleopatra´s needle"? But it needs a hot and sunny place...I wonder.

I love these and have tried to grow them several times without success. Strangely they grow over by the pond quite well so it must be I am doing something wrong :(

Yes me too Amy, the leaves are evergreen too so that's some structure over the winter.
Thank you Tt...:))
No that's a different plant Kat, the common name for this is Red Hot Poker and there are many types, usually summer flowering, but this one doesn't start until the autumn.

Gee, ther are so many types, this one was here when we bought the cottage.....the previous elderly gentleman had been a great gardener and had something growing for all seasons.....this one multiplies very easily.....I could send you a piece in spring?
It is Karen, a joy to see it!

That would be lovely, Janey, thank you. My ground is heavy clay - Would it survive in those conditions?

I think I would dig in some compost and grit for drainage Gee, it's planted in quite ordinary free draining soil in a sunny spot. It spends summer bulking up and producing new plantlets, then when its the end of the season, up shoot the flower spikes till mid winter. The only conditions that go against it are heavy snow reaching it's crown. When it's finished it's flowering, I may tie the leaves up over the crown for protection.
Gee it's Kniphofia rooperi......just remembered! What am I like???

I've just checked K. rooperi on the internet, Janey, and think it would be OK in my back garden then, much better soil there for some reason and doesn't water-log like the front. The others I've tried I have planted in the front, without doing much research, I'm sorry to say :(

Sure it will be fine, it's sheltered here by a south facing wall, does like free draining soil too.
