I absolutely love Iceland Poppies! There's several in this area of Balboa Park, San Diego, CA. It can only be grown here in the middle of winter. Photo taken on Jan. 16, 2013.

They're my favorite winter poppy. In late winter or early spring the California poppies (Eschscholzia californica our state flower, which is a native) will start to bloom everywhere.
