what you going to make with the veg. and soup and haggis

25 Jan, 2013

There are going to be six of us tonight. We'll start with the soup (cheating this year, but then Audrey does make good soup!) then we'll have haggis, neeps and tatties with onion gravy. We're finishing up with a home-made apple pie. When eldest is here, he treats us to Edinburgh Fog which is a lovely sweet, but OH can't join in because he's diabetic. I can make the pie with no added sugar, so then he can have some. We'll finish up with cheese if anyone's got room (some of our younger guests will have!)

sounds good to me, is neeps and tatties what my friend makes, mince meat and potatoes mashed in the pot

"Neeps" are what we call "swedes". In north-east England swedes are commonly called turnips, but to me that's another vegetable. They are boiled, then mashed and seasoned (I use pepper and a bit of ginger, also a bit of butter) "Tatties" are potatoes, and they are served mashed. There are various ways of serving it: separately in portions on a plate like an everyday meal, or layered (a bit like lasagne!) At my daughter's wedding, they had a second course of haggis, neeps and tatties in a little stack! It is accompanied by gravy. It's a very easy and economical meal to prepare - the haggis can be steamed, heated in the oven or microwaved - and is filling and very tasty. Haggis is basically a seasoned mince mixed with oatmeal.

Thanks for the link Scotsgran. I know more about it now then I ever wanted to :-) Haggis.......Set of sheep's heart, lungs, liver even stomach? Wow, ..not for this girl. Reminds me the kettles of boiling inners (do not know from what) here in Mexico I could not eat. But they probably would not eat raw oysters either.
I do love traditions though!

Interesting character Mr. Burns was.
:-)

I had to google "cranachan" as well Sticki, and that one I would love. :-)

Sorry klahanie I should have explained.

Haggis is a bit like sausage in that its maybe best not to think about what goes in it but believe me it is delicious! We had some in a Scottish hotel for my mum and dads 40th wedding anniversary, loved it ever since.

Is this Haggis served only on January 25th?

25 Jan, 2013

no it is available all year but the main feast is 25th January, even in the English supermarkets haggis is stocked up for this event.

25 Jan, 2013

Thank you Stickitoffee.

26 Jan, 2013

I buy it at Asda all year round!

I can now confirm a good time was had by all.

Would that be Glayva, Sticki? A very good substitute if you ask me!

(Haggis nowadays does not necessarily contain all the aforementioned ingredients, and it is certainly not contained in a sheep's stomach. You can also buy a very acceptable veggie version - part of the offering tonight consisted of one for the benefit of one of the guests)

That's the one melchisedec, it was half the price!

I have tried the veggie and the meat version ilike them both.
