Cyclamen in the garden

Love cyclamens! I can't grow them, though.

Why can't you grow them Delonix? I habe little baby Cyclamen growing but they are really small.

Cyclamen don't like when it gets really hot and dry (especially when we get the Santa Ana wind heat waves). The humidity can get down to the single digits. Last Thursday the humidity level was 6% in downtown San Diego. The Los Angeles Area is even worse. They sometimes have negative humidity values (it happens here sometimes, also), which can disiccate some plants to death.

They die off here too in the summer. Some of them come back, some of them don't.

The wild Cyclamen on Corfu die back in the summer and shoot back up in winter.

Negative humidity values!!! I'm sure it does a number on humans as well.

I want some of your native Corfu Cyclamens. :>)

Yes, the extremely low humidity values in winter dry us Southern Californians out like a prune! When it's a SOSA (sort of a Santa Ana [Winds]). It's not too bad; however, the stronger Santa Ana Wind events dry everything out like crazy! This is typically when temps can get up over 90ºF (32ºC) in the middle of winter. When it happens in Fall, this is when temps can get over 110ºF (43ºC).

This is not the native Cyclamen Delonix. I have a few of the wild ones in my garden too, they don't have big flowers but just as beautiful.

It's kind of like our Ostria...gives us all a headache and brings all the sand from Africa. Oh...we have all that to look foward to... when it comes with rain, everything turns orange...yuk ;o(((

I know this wasn't the native cyclamen. I saw the pics you posted in the past. They're a beautiful blue.

The Ostria (from what I've read are not quite as dry and hot and the Santa Ana winds; although, it sounds horrible!). We can sometimes get a haboob here; however, it's mostly common in the deserts, especially in Phoenix, Arizona. It also happens in the Central Valley of California. I've driven through horrible sand storms in the southern San Joaquin Valley.

Did you ever read this wind names chart form the internet? It has the three major winds that affect California. The Diablo, Santa Ana and Sundowner winds. It also list Ostria winds.
