Klahanie, this is Petrea volubilis or what we commonly call the Sandpaper Vine. It's a beautiful climber that can be trained into a shrub.

Bernieh, thank you so much. I do not think I can grow it on Vancouver Island (too wet in winter) but I like it so much here (in Mexico) I wanted to read about it.
I assume that it grows in Australia. Is it popular?

9 Feb, 2013

Yes it's very popular up here in the tropical zones of Australia. It's a great plant for tropical and sub-tropical zones, as it's native to Central America and West Indies. I don't think it would do well in a cold wet winter.

I know :-(

Beautiful Petrea! My friend has a large one on a trellis that seems to be ever-blooming.

Delonix, this one was very eye catching. No one could miss it and it was shaped as s little tree rather than vine
.......as we do that sometimes with Wisteria.

Yes, it's a woody vine like Bougainvillea (and can grow almost as large). It is commonly used as a shrub or standard. If I had one I would grow it as a nice small standard.

So would I. I just posted a picture for you how this shrub was kept. In a half moon.

I should get spme cuttings from MVM my GoY friend who lives a couple of miles from me.

Thanks! I'll check it out. :>)

I've been told that it won't grow in the bay area..but that person lives in cool Berkeley. I bet it would do ok here.

Stan:

I've seen Petrea growing in the SF Bay Area. It's a pretty tough vine. If it's grown next to the south-side of a house it should grow well.
