I never made any money out of them although they are to be found in some alpine catalogs,they all have the Stradbrook prefix in front of there name, at the time they were relaxation away from the stress of the day job,ie getting customers to pay for work that i had produced for them,that was the 70s/80s nothing changes.
A nursery was suggested by my wife as a alternative to Engineering but I could see plenty of problems with that so kept it as a hobby.I am glad i did.

I had the same experience as Amy . . . now keep my ONE Lewisia in a pot as I heard they prefer acid soil. Is that right Brian?!

yes Brian...I think you were wise. People ask me why I don't garden professionally....I fear it would ruin what is my passion!

Karen you will find Brians 'Stradbrook' primulas in the RHS Plant finder. Several American websites mention them too. Lots of people find them as attractive as we do. I think his OH would say 'as a way of life' rather than a hobby.

I have never given them acid soil,for that my other potting ingredients such as grit (which is used a lot with Lewisia) would need to me lime free.Admittedly if you purchase one in a garden centre it will be planted in peat as are most other things,but that is not good news as it will be either saturated or bone dry either way it will kill them.

Its not so much the medium as the winter wet we have in the UK ,Lewisia's are high level dweller from the Americas and would be dry well covered in snow throughout the winter months while dormant,there growth and flowering coincides with the snow melt when for a few months they enjoy plenty of water.

I assumed they were growing in a soil particular to each plant & the garden wasn't favourable to so many of the varied plants you grow & cutilvate.
