Lavanda stoechas 'Papillon' is my favourite of the lavender family. This plant has grey-green foliage and dark purple flowers

Floral, it is less winter hardy than the common lavender (Lavandula angustifolia) . Maybe that is why garden centers in Ontario will not carry it? Just guessing.

or sell as an annual? I just have seen it before :))

The shades of the leaves and the flowers are just perfect together. I love ALL lavenders.

Do you call it Spanish? Iy is sort of French lavender. It is more sensitive to frosts then Lavandula officinalis.

We call it either, Spanish or French but the "spanish" is more popular term around here Katarina.

Thanks for your comment and visit Wildrose. We have several lavender farms on Vancouver island ...we also have a lavender festivals. Do you have these as well?

brilliant plants aren't they K? I have a few types in the gravel garden & tubs, would never be without them. Superb photo & colours.

Great photo and a lovely plant. I don't seem to do too well with lavenders, they seem to get too woody and straggly in my garden, though it's probably my fault for not pruning them properly I expect!

They truly are Bampy. They do not demand any special treatment, only a little bit of sheering after they bloom. I dry these and put them in the bowls around the house and sometime I make wee pillows ...gifts for my girlfriends. I especially appreciate that they are not on Venishan diet.

Thanks Louisa. They do get little woody with time but regular sheering will keep them looking decent. Sometimes plants get leggy on me when I plant them in rich soil and fertilize them.

I just bought one yesterday which is white. I have not seen white before.

Louisa@I will upload something for you. British lavenders are usually higher and stronger then continental, mediterranean ones have usually smaller but more aromatic flowers. And you are right, they all tend to be more wooden bush by age, then a herb or plant. But with age it happens to majority of them - but when - it depends on trimming, you are right. But still, you can have beautiful ones for years. I will prepare something on blog for you this afternoon, if it is not raining. Stay in touch ;-)
Klahanie@Lavender festival - that sounds beautiful. I would like to join. We have festival of roses at the beginning of June - in Dolna Krupa (where Beethoven started to compose his Moonlight sonata) and also in Baden in Austria, the same weekend.

Thanks Katarina, I'll keep a look out!:)

Katarina,
We do not have rose festival :-(( only private gardens where people grow roses and open them for public view). Our island is not known for growing roses. I thing because they mold in our climate. Although, there is a stunning rose garden in Butcharts gardens -north of Victoria.
You have an open invitation for the lavender festival:-)

I love this dark one Klahanie . . . I do have a white one (bought from a local lavender farm last year) but it hasn't flowered yet.

The white one I bought is a nice healthy plant but has only few flowers on it Sheila. I thought that maybe mix of white and purple would look nice together but will wait with further purchase , I probably will not buy more if it blooms sparsely.

Had this many years ago, but lost it unfortunately, not so much cold as wet.....

I eventually lost the white one too.

That's a shame for you Klahanie and Dotty. My white lavender is in a trough - still going strong, maybe because I usually forget to water it?!
3 Apr, 2016
I would try it again but I have not seen the white for couple of years anywhere. . I envy you Sheila they are lovely plants . They are not common here.

If I knew how to take cuttings, K, I would send you one!
3 Apr, 2016
You have been lucky to keep a white one going Sheila.....

Thank you for the thought Sheila.XX
