Hywel, what are the red parts( with the eyes on)? They look like little shrimps emerging from out of a cactus!

They're berries ... They form after the flowers fade, and the 'eye' is where the petals were attached - like the bit on the bottom of an apple. Many of my cacti have them. I've never tried sewing the seeds though.

I`m not a cactus person Hywel but I can appreciate why you find them fascinating and most unusual.

Hywel , There is a chap on our estate that has about 1000 cacti in his double greenhouse and he seems to know the names of them all, he used to go around giving talks a number of years ago but now he suffers from bad health, It fascinates me how he can remember them all, but then again he has been growing them for years.

I would love to see those cacti. I have over 100, but a thousand is a lot ! I'm sure he remembers most of the names, like I do, because I've had them for so many years. It's the newer ones I have difficulty remembering ... because my memory failing now lol :)
