A gift from a friend this morning

He tells me it's a tender perennial Angela from the tomato family , it will go in the greenhouse I'm not sure if it will still be with us next year !

Ugh! Looks lethal!!
If it is pyracanthum family, I hate those!!
We have some next door to us but it grows over our garden. Our neighbour never minds us cutting it back, but I always managed to get stabbed a few times!! (not by the neighbour, I might add!!!!)
I would never have one, even as a gift!!
I will add that it looks very pretty as well - but that wouldn't redeem it for me!
Sorry Amy, one I don't like!! :(((

Looks interesting, but the better place would be in glass cube than on the table, lol. ;-) Take care for eye and fingers.

Lol This is an annual Shirley it probably won't last through the winter , don't worry I'll keep it well out of your way !! I agree with you Kat ,actually that would make quite an interesting feature !

ah well, if it is an annual Amy, I might be able to put up with it for that long out of interest!! ;)

Interesting plant Amy despite the armour. It must hail from somewhere where it's in danger of being eaten.

Amy, I found this little account of 'your plant' from someone in America who obviously is no fan!;
Sounds as if it is a real pest in it's native habitat!!

I too was fascinated with the bizzare plant when I first saw it, and having a garden full of spiny things decided to add this one to it.. it is an extremely drought tolerant plant here in So Cal... but it spreads like crazy all over the place. Each dinky little seedling immediately produces those noxious orange spines making weeding them a painful and delicate experience. I have since tried to rid my garden of this plant unsuccessfully. It gets huge, by the way- mine was nearly 8' tall and 8' wide before I hacked it down (two years later) and there are literally hundreds of seedlings showing up all the time- OUCH! Planter beware before adding this one to the garden!

I always think like that Feverfew it must be good to eat to protect itself to such an extent ..
Goodness Shirley I'm going to copy this for the friend who gave it to me he had several of them in pots they might take over here , seriously it doesn't sound to be a good plant to have ,I'm keeping it in the greenhouse where it may not survive the winter if it shows any sign of sprouting seeds its going out ,thanks for the info . very much appreciated :o)

No I wouldn't think it would survive outside here, -
too cold I expect, so no baby seedlings popping up everywhere!!
Maybe that's just as well. !

Love the look of this!

If it should ever have 'babies' meanie I'll let you know !

I had one of these last year A, it just survived the winter and took a long while to get going In the spring, it has a few small green fruits on but not sure if they are going to have time to ripen.

Thats interesting Ph , Do you keep yours in an unheated greenhouse ? I'm wondering because we haven't bothered to heat ours this last couple of years ,we've been lucky and haven't lost very much !

It was in a frost free greenhouse Amy, it died right back to the bottom and reshot from there in the spring.

Mm frost free greenhouse ! I might have to bring mine into the back porch to give it a better chance ........
