Unruly climbing rose

This rose is very unruly. It has very nicely shaped flowers and has lovely scent. We cropped it to the bones several times but it just wants to shoot long branches which ever way. It was in this place when we moved in and it is probably 40 years old. I believe that it is a heritage rose of sort. The people who built this house were both gardeners. The people we bought the house from, were not.
