Apple crop

Wow! That's a lot of apples! We can't grow apples here in San Diego, it's too warm in winter.

Wow! Congratulation. I had similar crop last year, but this year hardly one pot, lol. What a nice bench over there....

wonderful.....crop.....my rabbit belief or not ate or almost has...all my apples from tree.... :):):) can cider be made from these? and do you make your own if so... ;):)

I do not know, Klahanie, you probably know that, but this sort of apple (Spartan) is very old, it has more then 100 years of history. It was grown for decades in former Czechoslovakia. Did you buy it over there or did you import it?

:-) Yes we will be busy for next few days as we need to process it before we leave south.
I freeze some for yummy pies Helenium and the rest will be juiced. It makes wonderful juice.

We picked them before they fell on ground Jane but some were nevertheless pecked by birds. And we left some on the tree for them. I also will have a bucket of blemished one for deer , bear and other animals. We have 2 more apple trees to be picked.

Katarina I did not know that. This tree is at our guest house property (adjacent to ours) and it was there when we bought it, so I do not know where it came from . I see isles of apples in the grocery stores but not Spartans.
It is the best tasting apple of any of them. Especially plucked from the tree on a cool morning.

Now who's envious? lol....Spartans are a real fav...and Empire, too. I think the larger of my two small trees is a Spartan. The birds did real damage to the fruit and I didn't get many perfect apples but those I did get were delicious. Looking forward to next season.

:-) Our birds got into ours as well Lorilyn, that is why we had to pick them early. And I agree best tasting apples I know.

How do you juice your apples? My husband is thinking about buying an apple juicer (big-ish one, not an electric one) although I'm not keen on the idea.

I do not know how we could consume all the fruit without juicer, Tommymoo. We freeze it and drink it over the summer. It is delicious. We have an electric juicer and spend a day doing it :-)

Could you tell me what make it is? Is your juicer big? Do you juice with skin or without? How do you freeze it? - not in the glass bottle, I guess. Thank you very much for your reply in advance. I'm interested in buying one now, after reading your comment!

Tommymoo, we use Breville Juicer (I think it is the Elite model...it is already stored for winter). We drink lots of other juices as well and keep the plastic bottles (1.8L ?). I am sure you will think that it is worth the effort.
My friend has Omega juicer and is happy with that also.

Tommymoo, I also cut up (and froze ) apples for dozen pies and some sauces, gave some to the neighbours and we juiced about 25 liters. We do have a big deepfreeze. It was lots of apples. Even deer got some :-) We also had lots of pears which I pealed, cut up and froze for future use. It is very busy time of the year for us, we spend winters "south" where it is nice and warm. Same as you.... half and half. We are leaving in few days.

Thank you very much for all the intriguing info. We'll definitely buy a juicer next year, (and a deep-freezer one day). Whereabout in the "south" do you winter this autumn/winter if I may ask? We are also leaving next Monday.

We are wintering in Mexico . We are renting a house there. Going down for 14 years (same place).
But sometime we brake it up and stay in Arizona for couple of months. We have some good friends staying in Arizona. They bought a house in Phoenix area and also staying there for 6 months.
This year we'll stay all winter in Mexico. It is warmer there. We will be back on the Island in April.
