American Goldfinch

The only finch in its subfamily that undergoes a complete molt, the American Goldfinch displays sexual dimorphism in its coloration; the male is a vibrant yellow in the summer and an olive color during the winter months, while the female is a dull yellow-brown shade which brightens only slightly during the summer. The male displays brightly colored plumage during the breeding season to attract a mate.
(I did not actually take this photo. I posted it from public domain for demonstration as some inquired about them) :)

Thanks Jane. I'm glad you enjoy it. These finches are very difficult to catch for photo op. I can't take credit for this photo, but just wanted to demonstrate how stunning they are.

oh you're welcome Sandra. I'm glad you like it. They are special. They are really cute when they bob up and down as they fly. This is why I plant sunflowers in my garden. Thank You :)

I'm glad you like it Klahanie. In the summer I always have sunflowers growing up to my window so I can watch them while eating breakfast. Very cool!

Aren't they fantastic Thrupennybil? It's always a treat to see them in my garden. They love sunflowers so I make sure I have them growing.

They certainly are and fit their name too gold. The most wild coloured bird we have here in the uk is the Kingfisher a sight to see, when its sitting on the edge of a tiny branch and then dives into the little river.

Arent they songbirds? I remember as a child a little old lady had some in a big aviary with Canary's. Those were the days when you could keep native animals..1964 or so.

They do have a high pitched mating call, almost like a canary, but not quite the range. It's still enjoyable to hear.
