Few gardeners would have been able to resist such a bargain, Amy!
Just today when I was returning from town I passed a garden where they had a magnificent plant back in 2009 but the terrible winter of 2010 all but killed it off. Since then it has recovered quite well & looks better today than before the top was killed off.
It's just plain green but all the same it's a magnificent plant in the middle of the lawn in their front garden.

A similar thing happened to us Balcony we had a beautiful Cordyline it was a small plant rescued from a rubbish dump it grew to at least 10ft high with huge bunches of flowers at the top and then the frost killed it off in that same year, at least we thought it was dead we cut it right down to the ground and thought that was the end of it but this spring it has sent up new growth after all that time i had since planted a bush in its place but haven't the heart to try to move it ...they will have to compete for space ! I think rescued plants must behave in the same way as rescued dogs and love you for it :o)

I'm glad it survived for you! :-)) It seems they are more resilient than is generally believed! I know of other plants here that, although they weren't killed right down to the ground, did have a few outside branches killed off while inner branches, nearer the house, survived.
