They rub their wings together to produce their song sound, which serves as part of their courtship. Their ears tympana (hearing organs) are on their front legs.

Your photos are great, Klahanie. Especially the bugs! I like katydids and cicadas! I don't think we have katydids but I know that we have a type of cicada, which, as children, we used to call sawyerbugs.

This bug is my worst enemy in the garden. It eats everything. It can grow very large to 2 inches (5cm) long. I still have quite a few of them in my front and back yards.

:-) I think they look interesting but would not like to deal with infestation either.

Yes, interesting but destructive bug! The Malaysian variety grows to 4 or 5 inches long. YUCK! There's some at the San Diego Zoo.
I have a special way to kill this bug; however, I shall not say. My previous neighbor taught it to me. lol!

Homebird:
That's funny! They are scary-looking when you see large ones 2 to 3" (5 to 8 cm) long...like I get in my yard.

They're nightmares, alright. They eat everything in sight...and that's all year. Kadydids even eat my plumeria tree leaves, which no other bugs eat.
