Don't think it's a Hawkmoth as they have more plain brown and some have brown and pink wings. Could be a Leopard moth.

It looks like a brown grasshopper to me but I can't make out its long legs so I could be wrong!

Think it is grasshopper Milky, I wonder if it should be hibernating, poor thing!

it looks dead to me. Some of it's legs are gone. They normally live up in the trees.

I thought it was a locust at 1st because it was so large...nearly 3 inches long.....but being dead I wonder if the colouring has faded on it..OH thought it might be a Hawk Moth.....????

They are better off dead. They are highly destructive bugs. They tend to swarm and could decimate a garden in no time.

I'm constantly battling these giant locust (that's the normal color). They're horrible and do grow very large and eat every plant in sight! I still have many in my yard along with those horrible and even worse katydids! I hope you don't get an infestation of these locust.
I'm surprised that you have giant locust there this time of year... because they're only active when it's very warm like it is here in San Diego. Most of January here in San Diego has been between 75 and up to 87ºF (24 - 31ºC).
