Mystery bird!

Perhaps I should go to Specsavers! I spent ages this morning taking photos of two little birds that were behaving very nerviously in the garden, popping out to feed and then hiding away quickly. Eventually they flew into the pyracantha bush near the house and I snapped merrily away, glad to get some good shots. I think I managed to capture ..... a sparrow! I can only think the sunshine gave their feathers a green/yellow tinge. I feel a bit of an idiot but still think they are pretty little birds :)

No need to feel an idiot Gee, he looks a lovely little chap and as Sparrows are now on the list of endangered birds you're helping them survive the winter with your feeding.

Sparrows are so restless Gee. Impossible to count. There's are lots of them on my feeders and they like fat balls. If they spook they all vanish like magic into leafy shrubs near to. The blackbirds are still careering round the garden playing chase me and they are all male. The sparrows roost in pyracanthas in the Dunelm Mill car park. The noise of their twittering is very loud in the late afternoon.

I only see sparrows as flying bullets whizzing past, so well done for the picture!

Thank you. I was sure it was something rare as there was just two lurking under the bushes and they seemed to have yellow streaks in their feathers! A touch of over imagination I think. Dorjac, sparrows, starlings and jackdaws are mostly eating the fatballs here, I hang another feeder just for the tits :)

I did see an unusual feral pigeon in the garden on Friday. I don't recollect seeing one before. It was seen off by a very determined, plump wood pigeon and hasn't reappeared yet. Magpies eat fat balls if they can get at them. I stopped putting them out at one time, as they were so annoying.

Just looked again at your photo Gee and I'm wondering if because you saw faint yellow underneath whether or not it could be a juvenile Greenfinch. They are becoming increasingly familiar in our gardens and will often be seen in the company of Sparrows. According to my book of Britain's Birds it certainly fits the bill...if you'll excuse the pun lol!

I had hoped that, Waddy, but I think the beak is slightly different and in my photo there is no flash of green/yellow along the wings. I've kept a watch in the garden and all I see are sparrows :)

Oh what a shame. Never mind, Sparrows are still sweet little birds.

Lovely photo Gee. Think it's a House Sparrow (female).
I've been searching my bird books and there are one or two similarities of other birds, but looking at the shape and size of the beak I feel sure it's a House Sparrow.
