Prettily understated! In the garden? No lily beetles yet?

24 Mar, 2015

The lily beetles loved this when we grew it, they are devils for Fritillarias

Yes Dd, stopped growing lilies out doors for that reason ,so the lily beetles attack my Snakes Head Fritillaries instead. Wouldn't want them destroying more unusual ones, will just enjoy other peoples.

I spray as soon as we see them, I am afraid, it certainly works!

With a systemic insecticide? How long does that last? I usually pick them off and squash them.

An unusual Fritillaria & very pretty, too! :-)) Not seen one like that one before.

I do like these dark Fritallaries!
My biggest enemy with the smaller Frits are the slugs. Gone through all my F.elwesii as soon as they poked through the soil.

How sweet is that???

I haven't tried these before, and no red perils have visited me...yet...I do like them, a lot. I must make a note to order some bulbs in the autumn. ;-0

I haven't seen any Lily beetles on my balcony! I did discover some when the Lilies were growing on the allotment but not in the 2 years they have been on the balcony at home.

Lucky you. Grrr....

Sorry! :-(

Maybe they can't fly that high? Interesting....

14 Apr, 2015

If you try to pick off lily beetles, they quickly drop to the ground, probably wouldn't like a fall from a balcony!!

Don't forget they can fly, Siris. I was in my friend's garden yesterday and we picked off at least a dozen nibbling her Crown Imperials - I chucked on in her pond to see if they can swim as well...it floated around.

I drop vine weavil larvae in the pond, the fish like them but haven't tried lily beetles.

18 Apr, 2015

I don't think the fish were very interested in the lily beetles. :-(
I always drop snails in the stream - they *love* a swim out into the Bristol Channel! ;-D Lily beetles get squished. Grrr...

Our balcony is at ground level - not half a dozen floors up! Have a look at my photos page to see a few updated photos of our balcony.

As my Lilies are sprouting again this year I will let you know if I see any Lily Beetles. Perhaps I don't get them because there is nothing to draw there attention anywhere close by. There are plenty of gardens around but I can't remember having seen lilies growing in gardens in the near neighbourhood. If their grubs only feed on lilies that could be part of the explanation as to why I don't get them on the balcony. I wonder if they are strong fliers as that might make a difference as well.

No, they adore all Fritillaries too, Balcony. My friend has never had any in her garden and this year she grew Crown Frits for the first time and is inundated with the wretched things. Squish, squish, squish. How did they know she was growing Frits? (She always grows lilies and has never suffered before.)

27 Apr, 2015

I've never grown Fritillaries though every year when I see them in the shops I'm tempted!

I know of at least one garden, which I used to pass very frequently while working, that has Crown Fritillaries that grow well & flower every year. I've never looked at them close enough to see if they were infected by Lily Beetles though.

How they find out new "food" is mystifying, perhaps the plants release scent molecules that the beetles can detect even though we can't.

29 Apr, 2015

Whatever, they are VERY clever at 'seek and find', Balcony! Grrr.... I have only found one on my lilies so far this year. (squish!)

Mine are growing again this year, I've even got a new one my daughter gave me a week ago, on the balcony but, apart from aphids, I've not seen any Lily Beetles yet. Hope they stay away this year as well!

Too true. I haven't found any more yet - the weather might be helping.
